Zameen Kha Jai Gee Asmaan (The Earth Will Devour The Sky), Zalucky contemporary, Toronto, November 14th- December 21st 2024

Sara Khan’s work navigates the boundaries between reality and fantasy, drawing from personal experiences to explore complex themes of identity, heritage, and motherhood. Through an immersive practice that weaves together watercolors, ceramics, and textiles, Khan delves into the beauty, vulnerability, and strength found in these narratives. Each piece becomes a portal into a world where hybrid forms, unusual creatures, and surreal landscapes reflect the tension between the familiar and the unknown.

The artist often foregrounds pattern in her work, particularly floral motifs derived from her Pakistani heritage and her time growing up in Lahore. In Khan’s paintings figures often emerge from a dense backdrop of ornamental flora, their silhouettes poised between concealment and revelation. These figures are not static; they embody the fluidity of identity—constantly shifting, evolving, and adapting.

The use of watercolors on paper allows Khan to work with transparency and layering, qualities that mirror the nuanced emotions she endeavours to convey. The artist views the medium as an extension of her body—delicate but resilient, capable of holding a range of emotional and visual intensity. Khan’s ceramics and textiles similarly play with texture and form, adding a tactile element to her exploration of fragility and strength. They ground her work in the physical, while maintaining a sense of otherworldliness.
